“I’d like to start by thanking Terri and Tony for raising such a wonderful young woman. Big round of applause for that. And Steve and Brenda, I’d like to thank you for trying. Sometimes it just doesn’t work out. This hot mess is not your problem.”
In no time at all this guy managed to praise the bride, compliment her parents and insult the groom while making his folks feel included too – that’s some efficiency right there for you. Such a joke relies on misdirection initially, as everyone assumes you’re going to pay tribute to the groom as you have done with the bride. But by going in the opposite direction, you’ll keep the audience on their toes and have them listening out for more twists and turns.
Playing with the audience’s expectations is a simple way to inject humour into any formal speech. If you reach a part where a certain phrase or sentiment is par for the course, don’t be afraid to switch things up and make the speech your own.
