A delightful older brother
If you’re worried about how the Bride and Groom might react to some personal attacks on their character, make yourself the punch-line of a joke, but ensure the set-up is spent talking about the newlyweds, as in this great example.
“As I stood up on the stage, next to Brian and Megan as they shared their first kiss as husband and wife, it’s embarrassing to admit but that’s as close as I’ve been to action in a while”.
By making reference to an event everyone has just witnessed, you make the joke inclusive and engaging for everybody present. You don’t have to know them well; you just had to have seen their first kiss moments ago.
This joke also hits the tone of modern weddings right on the money. It’s strange and personal enough to make everyone laugh, it’s not too gross that the old folks get upset, the kids won’t have a clue what he means by “action”, and the Best Man now opens himself up for some sympathy attention from the bridesmaids. Everyone’s a winner! Here’s an equally self-deprecating line –
“I’m so glad that my brother has made an honest woman of you Megan, especially as soon you’ll have an extra mouth to feed. Brian said I could crash on your couch for three months. That’s still cool right?”
